Rather than flattening the sloped corner of their backyard, the owners of this Bateman property turned the challenge into a creative opportunity, designing a dimensional and elevated outdoor space. After decades in the home, the Hay family chose to rebuild and renovate, transforming their backyard into a versatile, stylish, and low-maintenance retreat.
With two daughters growing up and a love for entertaining, the Hays needed a functional outdoor area that could support family life and social gatherings. The original oversized kidney-shaped pool dominated the yard and left little room to enjoy. Their brief? A generous alfresco area and a compact, easy-care plunge pool.
The result is a thoughtfully zoned landscape, designed by Newforms Landscape Architecture and brought to life by Greenbuilt Construction. Featuring retaining walls, a cedar-lined alfresco area, and eco-conscious materials like natural stone and mahogany timber decking, the space seamlessly integrates entertaining and relaxation zones.
At the heart of the design sits the Ultimate Plunge Pool – a 6.5m x 3.5m fibreglass pool installed by Barrier Reef Pools. Elevated to match the contours of the sloping block, the pool creates visual impact and remains connected to the entertaining area. Its Royal Blue Shimmer interior contrasts beautifully with the bluestone capping and timber accents.
A generous swim area and built-in spa bench make this plunge pool both luxurious and family-friendly. Practical features like an in-ground blanket box keep the area tidy, while smart construction planning allowed for staged installation alongside the retaining walls and alfresco build.
Inspired by the Mandurah display centre, the Hays chose an earthy, modern palette of natural stone, exposed aggregate, and warm timber, resulting in a space that’s inviting year-round. Access challenges were overcome with ingenuity—removing the old pool by crane and repurposing the space with new soak wells.
After 14 months of meticulous construction, the result is a dream backyard. Whether entertaining a crowd or enjoying a quiet summer dinner as a family, this space is as practical as it is beautiful.
“It’s our dream backyard and entertaining space. The kids use the pool more now—it’s easier to manage, and it practically runs itself,” said Scott Hay.
