What Is The Purpose Of A Swimming Pool Filter Pump

What Is The Purpose Of A Swimming Pool Filter Pump?

If the size and style of a swimming pool is the main event, the unsung hero working behind the scenes has to be the filter.

A good filter works hard all the time to keep your pool clean, crystal clear and sanitary. In fact, any pool without a filter is like a home without a bathroom – not really functional.

Behind The Scenes

If your filter is doing its job correctly, you really won’t notice it. However, if it isn’t working, or unsuitable for your pool capacity, you’ll start to see a build-up of bacteria and dirt as well as insects and leaves. Without a good filter, your swimming pool could become a breeding ground for diseases instead of a healthy and relaxing feature of your property.

The Most Important Part Of Your Installation

Proper filtration will help your pool chemicals disperse around the pool to control bacteria, so never underestimate the power of a filter pump. It’s the most critical part of your pool installation and the more you use the pool, the more you should ensure adequate filtration. There are several types of filter you can use with your pool. Most popular is a sand filter. These are capable of filtering a lot of pool water in a short period of time. In this way, in addition to proper filtration, you also get excellent disinfection of the swimming pool. A sand filter means you need fewer maintenance products and have better water circulation and can be combined easily with a heat pump. The filter sand should be replaced every five years and is known to have the lowest maintenance of the three types of pool filters.

Cartridge Solutions For A Small Pool

If you have a small pool, you might want to consider a cartridge filter. Cartridge filters are ideal for small pools that require little maintenance, but they also have some disadvantages and require more maintenance. They can’t be backwashed, as such water loss is minimal, so pools with cartridge filters tend to be more water efficient. They’re not ideal for large pools, are easy to install and reasonably priced, but limited in strength and filtration is less fine than a sand filter and need regular replacement.

A Finer Filter

Of the three types of swimming pool filters, diatomaceous earth pool filters capture the finest particles—as small as 3 microns. The filtration is through an extremely fine powder made of fossilised plankton.

The filter is backwashed like the sand filter and on completion needs fresh diatomaceous earth powder added.

Though it is the most effective pool filter, it is the most expensive and requires more maintenance than a cartridge filter, and washed-out diatomaceous earth needs careful disposal as it is a hazardous material. It’s ideal for larger and commercial pools and needs replacing every two to three years and cleaning every six months.
